Obituary of Susan Young
Susan Young, 81, unexpectedly passed away at home in Utica, NY, and entered eternal rest on 4/15/2025. Susan has left her 3 loving children and son-in-law, Evelyn Zaida Young of Little Falls, NY, Cheryl Elizabeth Ritter (Ronald T Ritter) of Rockledge, FL, and Michael Calabria of Little Falls, NY. She was predeceased by 3 months by her significant other of 46 years, Theodore C. McQuade.
Susan was born on 3/8/1944. She was named Carolann Loring Zoller after her Mother, Carolyn Hildreth Zoller. Her Father, John Jacob Zoller, Esq., lovingly called her Susie, and eventually her name legally included Susan, with many people calling her Susie.
Susan attended grade school and high school in Little Falls, N.Y., plus she attended one year at a private, prestigious boarding school. Susan was a gifted musician and artist. Many people fondly remember Susie as the young harpist. As a child and adolescent, Susan performed locally as a harpist. She studied under the famous, reputable NYC harpist Mildred Dilling. Susan was offered a position in the NY Philharmonic but didn’t take the position. Susan also played the piano.
As a child, Susie was a member of Children of the American Revolution, which was locally run by her Mother. Susan went on, as did her Mother, to be a lifelong proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Susan was also a proud member of the Eastern Star. Susan was also actively involved with The Herkimer County Humane Society, which was founded by her Great Aunt Zaida Zoller.
Susan attended St Lawrence University and then Utica College and Syracuse University, where she received a Bachelor's and a Master's degree. As a young woman, she taught 2nd grade at St Francis De Sales in Herkimer, NY.
Susan was married to James L Young in 1965. They had 2 beautiful daughters, Evelyn and Cheryl. They divorced in 1970.
As a young Mother, Susan was a church secretary for The First Presbyterian Church. Faith and church were always a part of Susan’s life.
Susan enjoyed many years of substitute teaching in Herkimer and Oneida Counties before Susan became a Probation Officer and proudly worked and served Oneida County for over 20 years, working especially with youth.
Susan lived in Utica, NY, and in more recent years bought a home in Little Falls, NY, which she was very proud of and enjoyed fixing up and doing yard work and landscaping.
Susan and her significant other, Ted, enjoyed years of attending events at the Stanley Theater, Munson Williams, Ft Schuyler Club. They loved their time in Cape Vincent, NY, where they spent their time attending boat shows, car shows, arts, movies, and festivals.
Susan was predeceased by her parents, Carolyn and John Jacob Zoller. She is survived by her siblings John T Zoller (Baldwinsville, NY), Imogene Zoller (Little Falls, NY), Mary Zoller (Rick)Whiffen, MD (N Wales, PA), and Sarah Zoller (Little Falls, NY). She is survived by her 3 loving children, cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A small, intimate service was held for her children. There are no other services scheduled at this time. Interment was held at The Fairview Cemetery, Town of Little Falls, NY. She can be visited at the Zoller family plot. We are especially grateful to Chris Hanley and the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N.
