Obituary of Bernard J. Szlizewski

DOLGEVILLE Bernard J. Szlizewski, 90 of 130 S. Main Street, Dolgeville and since June of 2009 a resident of the Lutheran Care Home, Clinton passed away Saturday, January 2, 2010 at St. Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica. He was born on May 2, 1919 in Spandau, Germany the son of the late John and Mary (Wozaniak) Szlizewski. He was educated in Poland, Europe coming to the United States in February of 1950 and eventually settling in Dolgeville in 1952. He was united in marriage to his wife of 17 years the former Jeanie Hammond on August 18, 1945 in Hamburg, Germany. She predeceased him in 1962. In 1969 he was again united in marriage to the former Theresa Pagliaro, she also predeceased him in 1977. Mr. Szlizewski was a veteran of World War II serving with the Polish Army against the Germans in 1939. When Poland was over-run he was captured by the enemy and forced to serve with the German Army on the Russian front. After the war he spent five years in a DP camp. He was an avid reader having established his own extensive personal library. For many years he was a self employed painting contractor in Dolgeville retiring in 1982. He is survived by his son Dr. Lucacian D. Szlizewski, PhD. and his wife Jerri, Cullowhee, NC, his daughter Irene Panasiewicz and her husband Stanley, Schuyler, a brother Anthony Szlizewski, Scotland, England, 3 grandchildren Vicki Pellegrino and her husband D. Victor, Utica, Nathan Panasiewicz, Dolgeville and Daniel Szlizewski, Florida, 5 great grandchildren Katie Seelman, Luke Pomichter, Derek Seelman, Matthew Pellegrino and Ethan Pellegrino. He was predeceased by his beloved friend and companion of 21 years Leona Sherman in July of 1998. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Dolgeville Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are by the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls.
