Obituary of Catherine P. Potter

LITTLE FALLS Catherine P. Potter, 97 of W. Main Street, Little Falls passed away, Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the Alpine Nursing and Rehab. Center, Little Falls with her family by her side. She was born on January 31, 1916 in Little Falls the daughter of the late John and Katerina (Kovac) Panik. She was a graduate of Little Falls High school class of 1934 and a graduate of the Utica School of Commerce Class of 1935. She was first united in marriage to Eugene J. Hooks in 1940. Mr. Hooks was killed in action during World War II in 1944, after being shot down over the English Channel. In 1948 she was united in marriage to Bernard J. Potter, he predeceased her on July 25, 2009 after a union of 61 years. Catherine was a member of the Home Bureau, an avid Library patron, and enjoyed swimming at the YMCA. She loved to cook and bake, her specialty being Slovak pastries. She was a loyal Syracuse basketball fan and rarely missed a game on television. She was employed as a Secretary for the Herkimer County Judge, Hon. Edmund A. McCarthy and later in that same capacity for the Herkimer County Nurses, retiring in 1978. She is survived by her daughter; Kathleen Hooks Merrifield, Fairfax, Calif.; her sons John J. Hooks and his wife Barbara, Maryland; Michael J. Potter and his wife Gail, Little Falls and Steven M. Potter and his wife Aida, Ballston Lake, NY, grandchildren; Matthew and Emilie Potter, John D. Hooks, and Vladimir Vasquez, great grandson Sean Hooks; sister in law; Mary Potter Soule, Richfield Springs, brother in law; William F. Potter and his wife Betty, Seattle, WA, nephew; Paul Panik, and niece; Evelyn Panik Dolan. She was predeceased by her brothers John and Paul Panik. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in St. Marys Cemetery, Town of Herkimer. Arrangements are by the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls, NY. There are no calling hours. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Catherine be considered to the Holy Family Parish Church, 763 E. main St., Little Falls, NY 13365 or to the Little Falls Public Library, 10 Waverly Place, Little Falls, NY 13365 Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose.
