Obituary of Charles W. Phillips, Sr

LITTLE FALLS - Charles W. Phillips, Sr. 86 of 331 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls passed away Sunday, May 2, 2004 at the home of his daughter Anne Wyjad in Newark, NY. He was born on April 2, 1918 in Little Falls the son of the late Charles F. and Evelyn (Weller) Phillips. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School Class of 1936. He also attended the Excelsior School of Business, Utica. Mr. Phillips was first united in marriage to his wife of 49 years the former Kathleen Dowling on August 16, 1941. She predeceased him on August 20, 1990. On November 29, 1991 he was again united in marriage to the former Sophia Klc. She predeceased him on January 6, 1998. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Army. Entering the service in March of 1942. he was honorably discharged as a S/Sgt. on December 5, 1945. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish of Little Falls. He was also a long time active member of the Little Falls Call Fireman's Association, as well as a member of the Little Falls American Legion Post # 31, Elk's Lodge # 42 B.P.O.E., Little Falls and served as a Commissioner for the City of Little Falls Police and Fire Board. Mr. Phillips was employed at onetime as a school bus driver for his father the operator of Phillips Transportation, Little Falls. From 1952-1965 he served as the City of Little Falls Treasurer. He also at onetime was employed as a firefighter for the Village of Ilion Fire Dept.. He was last employed from 1966 until his retirement in 1982 in the customer service department for the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., in both the Little Falls and Herkimer offices. He is survived by 2 sons Charles W. Phillips, Jr. and his wife Suzanne, Scotia, NY and Paul D. Phillips, Roxboro, NC, his daughter Anne Wyjad and her husband Ronald, Newark, NY, a brother Grant W. Phillips and his wife Charlotte, Little Falls and a sister Ellen Hughes, Roxbury, NY, 7 grandchildren Sander Wyjad, Nederland, Colo., Shawn Wyjad and Todd Wyjad both of Canandaigua, NY, Kyle Wyjad, Newark, NY, Jennifer Phillips, Scotia, NY, Brittany Phillips and Brain Phillips both of Roxboro, NC, a great granddaughter Peyton Wyjad and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at 10:15 am from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls and at 11:00 am from the Holy Family Parish Church, Cor. of Main & John Str.'s, Little Falls where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Herkimer. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 from 4-6 pm and to attend the funeral services Wednesday morning. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mr. Phillips be considered to the Ontario-Yates Hospice, 756 Pre-Emption Road, Geneva, NY 14456 or to the American Cancer Society, 100 Lomond Court, Utica, NY 13502. The Little Falls Regular & Call Firefighters will call in a body at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm.
