Obituary of Edward R. Scanlon

LITTLE FALLS - Edward R. Scanlon, 93 of Little Falls passed away Saturday, November 1, 2008 at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica. He was born on June 14, 1915 in Little Falls the son of the late Matthew and Elizabeth (Kennedy) Scanlon. He was educated in Little Falls Rural Schools. He was united in marriage to his wife of 55 years the former Teresa G. McEvoy on December 26, 1953 at St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. Mr. Scanlon was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Army, entering the service on May 26, 1942. He served Battery B 633 AAA Battalion in central Europe and the Rhineland. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on February 6, 1944. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class on October 10, 1945 at Ft. Dix, NJ. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish Church, Little Falls, as well as a life member of the S/Sgt. Steve Stefula Post# 4612, VFW, Little Falls and the General Herkimer Chapter # 130, Military Order of the Purple Heart. He also served as a town of Little Falls Councilman for many years. He helped with the mowing at St. Mary's Cemetery for many years as a volunteer. Mr. Scanlon was employed at different times over the years in the logging, farming, construction industry, as well as for the Town of Little Falls Highway Dept. He also owned and operated his own excavating business for many years. In recent years, he enjoyed getting together (garage time) with friends and neighbors at Donny Cotton's farm. Edward had a passion for life and made the most of every minute. He will be greatly mourned and missed by everyone whose life he touched. He is survived by his wife Teresa, 2 daughters Eileen M. Scanlon, Little Falls and Lois A. Scanlon and her husband Glenn Wagner, LaFargeville, NY, and a grandson Nicholas Wagner, Lake City, FL. Extended family includes his sisters-in-law Marion Scanlon, Agnes Scanlon, and Helen Scanlon, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 5 brothers Harry Scanlon, Douglas Scanlon, 1957, Kenneth Scanlon, 1993, William Scanlon, 1995, and Paul Scanlon, 2002. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 11:00 am from the Holy Family Parish Church, Cor. Main & John St's, Little Falls where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Ligato. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Herkimer where Military Honors will be accorded. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 from 5-8 pm and to attend the funeral services Thursday morning. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mr. Scanlon be considered to the Herkimer County Humane Society, PO Box 73, Mohawk, NY 13407.
