Obituary of Ernest M. Underwood
ST. JOHNSVILLE Ernest M. Underwood, 96 of Kringsbush Road, St. Johnsville passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at his residence.
He was born on September 2, 1913 in Genoa, NY the son of the late Leslie and Rachel (Sill) Underwood. His mother Rachel passed away when he was seven days old and he was raised by his father and his step mother Lydia (Mason) Underwood. He was a graduate of Genoa High School as well as a graduate of Cornell University.
He was united in marriage to his wife of 66 years the former Carrie M. Johnson on October 31, 1942 at the Inghams Mills Baptist Church. Mrs. Underwood predeceased him on February 21, 2009.
Mr. Underwood was a member of the Inghams Mills Baptist Church. As well as an over 60 year member of the Lansing Lodge # 774 F&AM, Lansing, NY, a member of the Ziyara Temple of the Shrine, AAONMS, Utica and a past member of the Margaret Reaney Memorial Library, Board of Trustees, St. Johnsville. He was an avid reader and enjoyed stamp collecting. Following his retirement he and his wife Carrie traveled quite extensively around the world and enjoyed giving slide presentations to various groups of their travels.
Mr. Underwood was employed for 38 years as an Industrial Arts and Agriculture teacher for the St. Johnsville Central District and is fondly remember for his many years as the Drivers Education Instructor.
He is survived by his son Reginald L. Underwood, Spencertown, NY, his daughter Sylvia J. McClellan and her husband Terry, Uniontown, Ohio, his sister Evelyn Brown, Auburn, NY, 7 grandchildren Vivecca Underwood and her husband Jon Mazella, Brian Smith, Kevin Smith and his wife Kristan, Dale McClellan and his wife Christina, Aaron McClellan, Ryan McClellan and Melissa Kimbler and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11:00 am from the Inghams Mills Baptist Church, 439 Inghams Mills Road, Little Falls with the Pastor Gertrude Ortlieb officiating. Interment will take place in Rural Park Cemetery in the spring.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls on Friday, March 5, 2010 from 4-7 pm and to attend the funeral services Saturday morning.
