Obituary of Gerald Rice
INDIAN CASTLE - Gerald A. Rice, 70 of 2894 State Route 5S, Little Falls passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at his residence.
He was born on August 6, 1933 in the Town of Danube in the same home in which he resided the son of the late George and Ida (Tinkler) Rice. He was educated in the Town of Danube Rural Schools and St. Johnsville Schools.
He was united in marriage to his wife of 47 years the former Jean C. Pettengill on August 3, 1957 at the First Baptist Church, Little Falls.
Mr. Rice was a veteran of the Korean War serving with US Army. He entered the service on March 20, 1953 in Syracuse. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on March 1, 1955 at Camp Kilmer, NJ.
He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Little Falls. As well as a member of the American Legion Post # 31, Little Falls, the S/Sgt. Steve Stefula Post # 4612 V.F.W., Little Falls, Dolgeville Rod & Gun Club. For many years he served as a committeeman for the Little Falls Boy Scout Troop # 13 and later for the St. Johnsville Boy Scout Troop. He was also a member of the Kamargo Lodge # 242, Order of the Arrow.
Mr. Rice for many years was self employed as a White Washer during the summer and worked for the Town of Little Falls Highway Dept. during the winter. He later was employed as a toolmaker for Helmers Tool & Dye Co., West Winfield. He was last employed as a machinist for the Remington Arms Co., Ilion. Retiring after 25 years of service.
He is survived by his wife Jean, 4 sons Timothy B. Rice and his wife Elane, Niskayuna, NY, Allan L. Rice, Greenfield, MA, Mark S. Rice and his wife Cathy, St. Johnsville and Carl G. Rice, Syracuse, 3 brothers Charles Rice and his wife Patricia, Little Falls, Carleton (Bud) Rice, Ft. Plain and Stanley Rice and his wife Ann, Little Falls, 2 sisters Catherine Schultz, Pompei, NY and Karen Rice, New York City, 7 grandchildren Carol, Katherine, Elizabeth, David, Gage and Daniel Rice and Jennifer Blair and her husband Kevin, 2 great grandchildren Kevin and Helene Blair, several nieces and nephews and his extended family.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 25, 2004 at 10:00 am from the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, E. Gansevoort, Little Falls with the Rev. Carl Evans, Pastor officiating. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls on Thursday, June 24, 2004 from 5-8 pm and to attend the funeral services Friday morning.
In lieu of flowers it is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mr. Rice be considered to the Mt. Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main Street, Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, E. Gansevoort, Little Falls, NY 13365. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown and to the staff of Mt. Valley Hospice for their care and kindness shown to Mr. Rice and his family.
