Obituary of Mary Groff

ST. JOHNSVILLE - Mary S. Groff, 94 of St. Johnsville passed away Thursday, November 29, 2007 at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home where she had been a resident since December 27, 2005. She was born on October 25, 1913 in Inghams Mills the daughter of the late Ross C. and Nina (Snell) Johnson. She was a graduate of Dolgeville High School class of 1931. She received her teachers training at the Broadalbin Teachers Training Class and continued at Oneonta Normal School and later taught at Rockwood Rural School. She was united in marriage to Ralph J. Groff on April 28, 1936 at the Inghams Mills Baptist Church, with the Rev. Florence Hamilton assisted by the Rev. George Kling. Mr. Groff predeceased her on June 5, 1999. Mrs. Groff was a member of the Crum Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church were she served as the church financial secretary and treasurer. She was also a member of the Church Missionary Society and the Crum Creek Grange. Mrs. Groff and her husband were the owners and operators of Ralph J. Groff Florist, St. Johnsville. She is survived by 2 sons Donald Groff and his wife Sandra, East Rochester and Gerald Groff and his wife Patricia, Verona, 2 daughters Janet Werfelmann and her husband Richard, North Syracuse and Evelyn Thode, Canajoharie, a sister Carrie Underwood and her husband Ernest, St. Johnsville, 2 sisters in law Eleanor Johnson, St. Johnsville and Frances Johnson, Bergen, NY, 11 grandchildren John Werfelmann and his wife Caryn, Richard Werfelmann, Ellen Topor and her husband Mark, Mark Werfelmann, David Groff and his wife Michele, Kevin Groff and his wife Becky, Brian McLean and his wife Michele, Kimberley McLean, Laura Thode, Alan Thode and his wife Janette and Daniel Thode and his wife Amanda, 15 great grandchildren Brittany, Savanna and Sierra Topor, Benjamin, Nathaniel and Zachary McLean, Thomas Groff, Celeste Groff, Jordyn, Tara and Nicholas Werfelmann, Alexander Groff, Jillian Groff, and Grace-Lynn and Emma Thode and several nieces and nephews. She was prdeceased by 2 brothers Kenneth Johnson, in 1964 and Irving Johnson in 2005. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at 1:00 pm from the Crum Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church, County Highway 108, St. Johnsville with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Interment will take place in Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls on Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 5-8 pm and to attend the funeral services Sunday afternoon. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mrs. Groff be considered to the Crum Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church, c/o rev. Kenneth Dingman, 36 Lydius St., Ft. Plain, NY 13339.
