Obituary of James L. Smith

LITTLE FALLS - James L. Smith, 71 of 223 Flint Ave., Little Falls passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital, New Hartford. He was born on June 9, 1935 in Little Falls the son of the late Clarence D. and Bernice (Hotaling) Smith. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School class of 1953, as well as a graduate of the Steuben Trade School, where he study tool and die making. He was united in marriage to his wife of 52 years the former Josephine M. Kovac on January 8, 1955 at St. Mary's Church, Little Falls. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Marine Corps. Entering the service on October 8, 1953 in Albany. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on October 7, 1956. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Herkimer - Little Falls. As well as a member of the Dolgeville - Little Falls Masonic Lodge # 796, F&AM and the Royal Arch Mason Lodge # 161, Little Falls. Mr. Smith was employed as a machinist for 30 years by the former Chicago - Pneumatic Corp, Utica. He also served in that same capacity at onetime by the former UNIVAC and Bendix Corps. both of Utica. He was an avid outdoorsman. He was fond of hunting and fishing, and enjoyed woodworking and gardening, as well. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife Josephine, his son Alan J. Smith and his wife Teresa, Baldwinsville, his 2 daughters Pamela King and her husband Rodney, Bozeman, Montana and Laura McCann and her husband Daniel, Ilion, his brother Garrison H. Smith, Syracuse, 4 grandchildren Amber Harris and her husband Dr. Tucker Harris, MD, Syracuse, Peter King, Bozeman , MT, Kelsey and Abigail McCann, both of Ilion, a special niece Joyce Donohue, Syracuse, dear friends Charles T. (Thirsty) and his wife Ethel McKusick and their family, Mohawk, his sisters in law Mary Gartner and her husband Joseph and Audrey Kaucher, both of Little Falls. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls with the Rev. Dr. Steven A. Scarcia, Rector of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls officiating. Interment will take place in Mt. View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls. There are no calling hours. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mr. Smith be considered to the Children's Miracle Network, 1676 Sunset Ave., Utica, NY 13502 or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 7, East Syracuse, NY 13057. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose.
