Obituary of John G. Neary

HERKIMER - John G. Neary, 80 of 411 N. Caroline Street, Herkimer passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at Bassett Healthcare Center, Cooperstown with his loving wife and family at his side. He was born on March 30, 1926 in Little Falls the son of the later John W and Katherine (Roedel) Neary. He was educated at Little Falls High School. He was united in marriage to his wife of 55 years the former Jean E. Silvernail on January 6, 1951 at the First Baptist Church, Little Falls. Mr. Neary was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Navy. He entered the service on November 14, 1944 in Albany. He served in the Asiatic Pacific theatre with a motor torpedo boat squadron. He was honorably discharged as a motor machinist mate third class on July 21, 1946 at Lido Beach, LI, NY. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Herkimer. He was a gardener and fisherman and was especially fond of his woodworking shop and in his later years he enjoyed the time spent learning about computers and the internet. Mr. Neary was employed for 1956 - 1964 assisting his parents in the operation of Neary's Restaurant in East Creek. He was last employed as a supervisor of the shipping and receiving department of the former Allegro Shoe Corp., Little Falls. Retiring in 1985. He is survived by his wife Jean, 2 sons Donald A. Neary and his friend Patricia Dinardo, Newport and Robert D. Neary and his wife Kathleen, Ilion, a daughter Beverly Griffin and her husband Brian, Fairfield, 4 grandchildren Brice Griffin and his wife Kerri, Lisa Marriott and her husband Joe, Nicole Overacker and her husband Paul and Rebecca Neary, 6 great grandchildren Spencer and Jake Griffin, Tyler and Kelsey Marriott and Don and Shawn Overacker, brother and sister in law Charles and Patricia Rice, Little Falls and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at 7:00 pm from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls with Rev. Ann Zimmerman, Pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Herkimer officiating. Final interment will take place in Church Street Cemetery, Little Falls in the spring. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers it is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mr. Neary be considered to the Dialysis Unit of Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 443 Henry Street, Herkimer, NY 13350. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose. The family would like to thank the staff of the Dialysis Unit and the Third Floor of Bassett Healthcare for their care and compassion shown to Mr. Neary and his family.
