Obituary of Marion R. Long

DAYTON, OHIO, Marion R. Long, 87, of Dayton, Ohio passed away Sunday, March 28, 2010 at home. She was born on January 22, 1923 in Little Falls the daughter of the late Michael and Lena (DeRosa) Marino, Sr. She was a 1940 graduate of Little Falls High School and the College of St. Rose in Albany where she earned her BSN degree in nursing in 1944. She served in the US Army Nurse Corps at Fort Sam Houston, Texas from March of 1945 until her honorable discharge in May of 1946. After the war she married Peter I. Long Jr., M.D. and together they made their home in Dayton, Ohio where she taught at St. Elizabeth's Hospital School of Nursing and volunteered as a Red Cross nurse. She was a loyal fan and member of the St. Louis Jazz Club, traveling there often with Peter to hear their cherished Dixieland Jazz musicians. Marion also enjoyed extensive travels throughout the US, especially in the Southwest. She traveled to Europe, a highlight of which was a visit to her father's original home in Sicily. She greatly enjoyed reading, opera, genealogy, and lively conversations with friends and time with her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her spouse of 53 years, Peter I. Long Jr., M.D., and her brother, Michael Marino, Jr. She is survived by her sister Arlena N. Marino; daughters Christine J. Long, Mimi Martin and her husband Perry Martin; Kathleen R. Wittberg, M.D. and her husband Thomas N. Wittberg; grandchildren Jason Martin and his wife Angela, Cory Martin See and her spouse Jammie, Mary Beth Wittberg Brozo her spouse Christopher, Neil M. Wittberg, Paul Wittberg; great-grandchildren Isabella and Victoria See, and Jackson and Rowan Martin. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, April 7, 2010 in Dayton. Funeral services locally will be held on Friday, April 9, 2010 at 11:00 am from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls with the Rev. Daniel Lanza officiating. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Town of Herkimer. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Friday, April 9, 2010 from 9-11 am and to attend the funeral services to follow. It is the wish of the family in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
