Obituary of Martin D. Mayton

PAINES HOLLOW - Martin D. Mayton, 87, life-long resident of Paines Hollow in the Town of Stark peacefully continued his journey through eternal life on January 4, 2010 with loving family at his side. He was born to Samuel and Anna (Viskup) Maytan on October 8, 1922 on the home farm on Aney Hill Road. He grew up there in a loving family who valued hard work, the satisfaction that comes from working together and a deep love and respect for nature. Through his family his faith and Slovak roots were cultivated so that he clearly understood and lived out his gratitude for a life of freedom and one's responsibility to the greater community to continue the "good life" for all. He spent his years of formal education at Owen D. Young Central School and, in later life, dedicated his work life to being an employee of the ODY School District as a Bus Driver and Custodian. He considered his position as one of the most important as he transported "the most precious cargo" on a daily basis for 34 years as well as being a faithful steward to the district's property to assure that the students and staff had a facility which maximized their ability to learn. Prior to his employment with the school he was employed by the former Remington Rand Co., Ilion as well as owning and operating his own excavating business Mayton Construction. It was at the dance hall, Ben Hur, that he first met Jennie (Jean) Nasypany. He and Jean were joined in marriage on June 15, 1946 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Herkimer. With that union began a blessed relationship which created their family of three children as well as melded both of their extended families, which resulted in wonderful celebrations and memories over the next 63 years. His legacy of commitment to family and faith will continue as this union was dedicated to their children, grandchildren and great- grandchild. Although he lived his entire life on Aney Hill, he embraced diversity and loved to travel. He lived out his dreams in traveling to his parents homeland in Europe as well as visiting South America, Australia, Mexico, and nearly all of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Little Falls. As well as a member of the Van Hornesville Vol. Fire Dept., the NYS Association of Town Supervisors, the former Little Falls Moose Lodge, the Little Falls Polish Community Home and the Sprite Club. He also enjoyed bowling in local leagues at the Van Hornesville Bowling Alley and had a great interest in environmental conservation. Mr. Mayton served as the Town of Stark Assessor for 24 years and later as the Town Supervisor for 14 years. He is survived by his wife Jennie (Jean), his son Mark Mayton and his wife Linda, Stanley, NY, his 2 daughters Linda Shutts and her husband John, Freeville, NY and Cathy Collins and her husband Dan, Jordanville, NY, 8 grandchildren James Blanchard and his wife Melissa, Michael Collins, Leland Collins and his fiancé© Devon Birek, Jennifer Collins, Martin Collins, Anna Mayton, Benjamin Mayton and Nathan Mayton, a great grandson Andrew Blanchard and many nieces and nephews, Brother-in-laws and their wives: Paul and Frances Nasypany of Herkimer, Joe and Phyllis Nasypany of Royal Oak, MI, Ray and Shivaun Nasypany of Granby, TX., Sister in law and her husband: Emily and Vaughn McPherson of Central Square, NY and Sister-in-laws: Helen Nasypany of East Herkimer, Beatrice Nasypany of Mohawk and Pat Nasypany of Herkimer.
