Obituary of Mary Loewenstein

LITTLE FALLS - Mary Loewenstein, 85 a long time music teacher in the Little Falls schools died on February 24, 2007 in Mayfield OH of complications from a stroke. She was the widow of the late Dr. Gustav Loewenstein. Mary was born in 1921 at Findley Lake, NY the daughter of the late Dr. James and Kate (Bowlin) Finn and attended Oberlin College where she studied music and violin. After graduation in 1943 Mary took a job as music teacher in Holland Patent, NY, a position she held until she moved to Little Falls in 1950 where she taught music for the Little Falls City School District. In 1952 she married the Dr. Loewenstein and resided with him on Garden Street until 2006 when she moved to assisted living in Chardon OH. In addition to teaching in the school Mary taught private students in violin and was active in the musical life of Little Falls. During the 1980's and 90's she was the principal violinist in a chamber music ensemble that performed, among other places, at South Shore Arts at Canal Place. Mary was a long time member of Temple Beth Joseph in Herkimer. Throughout her life all those who knew her felt joy and comfort in her presence. She leaves her brother James Finn and his wife Jeanne of Findley Lake and Florida, a niece Barbara Procter of Erie Pa, and her adopted family members: Ernest Loewenstein and Phyllis of Newton Massachusetts, their daughters Janet Loewenstein and her husband Adam Levinson of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, Sarah Fanger and her husband Jeffrey and their daughters Elizabeth and Samantha, and Max Loewenstein and his wife Era of San Francisco, California , their daughters Ilana Loewenstein and her husband Daniel Paz and their son Adam of San Francisco, Miriam and her husband Michael Margaliot of Tel Aviv, Israel and Tamara Loewenstein of San Francisco, plus several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in Chardon, Ohio on Sunday, March 4,2007. A local memorial service will be held at a time to be announced in the spring. Interment will take place in Temple Beth Joseph Cemetery, Herkimer. Arrangements are by the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls, NY.
