Obituary of Stefan (Steve) Malek

COLORADO SPRINGS - Stefan (Steve) Malek, 94 passed away Sunday, November 6, 2010 in Colorado Springs, CO He was born on October 9, 1916 in Little Falls, New York to Jan and Suzannah (Majtan) Malek. He worked in industry as a steel fabricator, foreman, and as an industrial engineer. He married the one girl of his life, served in the Army, raised a family, and was devoted to them. He grew up in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church whose congregation then was mostly immigrants from Slovakia. Steve graduated from Little Falls High School in 1934. Soon after, he met Anne Yavornitzki from Herkimer, NY. They married on December 28, 1940 and spent the next 65 years together. They raised two sons, Stefan and Paul. Steve joined the army in 1940 as an enlisted man. He applied to OCS, became a "90 day wonder", served in the Signal Corps and other branches, was stationed all around the U.S., and left the army a 1st Lieutenant in 1945. Back in Little Falls, Stefan worked for the Cherry Burrell Corporation for 27 years. In 1962 he joined General Electric as an industrial engineer. They moved with GE to Clifton Park, NY and Owensboro, KY where he retired. Steve and Anne moved to Colorado Springs in 2003. At age 11 Steve began caddying at a local country club. This began a lifelong affair with golf which he enjoyed and passed on to his family. He also enjoyed fishing becoming a skilled fly caster and fly tyer. The most important people in Steve's life were his family members. He is survived by brother Paul Malek (Mazie), Shokan, NY, sons Stefan Malek, Boulder, CO and Paul (Patricia Kule) Malek, Colorado Springs, CO grandchildren Jeffrey, Krista, Catherine, and Andrew, and a large extended family. He was predecesed by a brother John Malek and a sister Anna Toher. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 10:00 am from the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 512 E. Gansevoort Street, Little Falls with the Rev. Joseph Famulare, Pastor officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Little Falls where Military Honors will be accorded. Arrangements are by the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls. There are no calling hours It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Steve be considered to the Alzheimers Association. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose.
