Obituary of Carolyn Hildreth Zoller

Carolyn Hildreth Zoller LITTLE FALLS - Carolyn Hildreth Zoller, 91 of 26 Diamond St., Little Falls passed away on Monday, July 21, 2003 at Little Falls Hospital. She was born on May 16, 1912 in New York City, the daughter of the late Loring Townsend and Augusta Warner Miller Hildreth. She was the granddaughter of US Senator Warner Miller the only Senator from Herkimer County. He was a pioneer in the paper industry and was her beloved grandfather, important in her life as her father died in 1915. Her nick name Chiqua, was started by her mother after her godmother and mother's longtime friend Edith Collins. Mrs. Zoller received her early education at a series of convent schools in Europe including Monaco, Cologne, Germany and Rome, Italy. She attended the Assumption Convent in both Bordighera, Italy and San Sebastian, Spain. She began her high school studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and returned to Herkimer to finish. Mrs. Zoller graduated from Herkimer High School in 1930. She was also a graduate of St. Lawrence University Class of 1934, where she received her BA in history and language. Mrs. Zoller was employed at one time as a social worker in Herkimer and in the New York City area. She was united in marriage to John J. Zoller, Esq., on August 17, 1940 at the Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. Her family was most important to her. Her children first and then her extended family on both the Hildreth and Zoller sides. She was a member of the Hildreth Family Association and she wrote a book on the Mohawk Valley Zollers and Allied families She could always tell an interesting story about family history including her own family and many other families in the Mohawk Valley. Throughout her life Mrs. Zoller was active in many organizations, giving generously of her time and money. She was an over 50 year member of the DAR served as Regent for 2 terms, and was in the Nation officers Club. She organized a children's group of the DAR called the CAR - Palatine Society. She was a 20 year member of the DFPA, the Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of America. She was an over 50 year member of the former Rock City Chapter # 272 O.E.S., (Order of the Eastern Star), Little Falls. Mrs. Zoller was an over 50 year member of the Mohawk Homestead and served many years on Board of Directors. She was an over 50 year member of the Herkimer Humane Society founded by Zaida Zoller, where she served as vice president and showed her kindness to animals as well as people. Her strong interest in history can be seen in her over 50 year membership in the Herkimer County Historical Society, and 24 years as a volunteer in their 1834 jail gift shop. She was also a member of the Little Falls Historical Society. Her many other activities included: the Little Falls Mothers Club, 10 years on the Little Falls Hospital Guild, the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, the Community Chest, The Fort Schuyler Club of Utica and the Herkimer Progressive Club, where she served 2 terms as president. Mrs. Zoller was a member of St. Paul's Universalist Church, Little Falls and served on the Board of Trustees. She was a member and past president of the UUW, the ladies group of that church. She is survived by her husband John, Little Falls, a son John Tyler Zoller, Syracuse and 4 daughters Carolann Susan Z. Yong and special friend Theodore C. McQuade, Utica, Imogene Hildreth Zoller, Little Falls, Mary Augusta Zoller M.D. and her husband Richard C. Whiffen, Lansdale, PA and Sarah Z. Thrasher and her husband Wilbur Thrasher, Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren Evelyn Zaida Young, Cheryl Elizabeth Young and her fiancé© Ronald Troy Ritter, Michael James McQuade, Richard Zoller Whiffen, Amy Carolyn Whiffen, Gail Hillary Whiffen and Jacob Loring Thrasher. Funeral services will be held at the Convenience of the family. Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Town of Little Falls. Arrangements are by the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls. There are no calling hours. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mrs. Zoller be considered to the St. Paul's Universalist Church, 565 Albany St., Little Falls, NY 13365, the Herkimer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 73, Mohawk, NY 13407 or the Mohawk Homestead, 62 E. Main St. Mohawk, NY 13407. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose.
