Obituary of Leo L Barnes

STRATFORD – Leo L. Barnes¸82 of West Shore Road, Stratford passed away Friday evening February 7, 2014 at Little Falls Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 21, 1931 in Stratford the son of the late George Leon and Edna (Lyons) Barnes and attended Stratford Schools. He was united in marriage to his wife of 34 years the former Marlene Youker on September 20, 1952 at the United Methodist Church, Salisbury Center. Mrs. Barnes predeceased him on April 9, 1987. Mr. Barnes was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Army. Entering the service on August 18, 1948. He served with Company B, 700th Ordinance Battalion, 45th Infantry Division and was cited for meritorious service in Korea on November 1, 1952. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on May 26, 1960. He was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls. He was also a member of the American Legion Post # 31, Little Falls, the Stratford Senior Citizens and a member of the former Little Falls Moose Lodge # 615. Mr. Barnes was employed for 45 years as a machine operator for North Hudson Woodcraft, Dolgeville. He is survived by his loving companion of 25 years Veronica (Duke) Rockwell, Stratford, his sons and daughters in law; Richard (Rick) L. and Mary Barnes, Salisbury Center and Leo R. and Ida Barnes, Dolgeville, his daughter and son in law; Cynthia J. and Donald Markwardt, Dolgeville, eight grandchildren; Jason Barnes (Jessica), Salisbury Center, Adam Barnes (Stephanie), Dolgeville, Alicia Barnes (Logan), Little Falls, Christian Cool, Texas, Terry Lamphere, Little Falls, Michael Lamphere, Salisbury Center, Eric Markwardt, Dolgeville, Michael Young (Amanda), Salisbury Center, and Kayla Ploss, Dolgeville 22 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his beloved dogs Charlie and Sugar. He was predeceased by his brother Everett L. Barnes and his sister Helen Barnes Daly. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 1:00 pm from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls, NY with the Rev. Dr. Steven A. Scarcia, Rector of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls officiating. Interment will take place in Salisbury Rural Cemetery, Town of Salisbury in the spring where Military Honors will be accorded. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm and to attend the funeral services to follow. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mr. Barnes be considered to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 7, East Syracuse, NY 13057. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Little Falls Hospital esxpcally the third floor for the wonderful compassion and care given to Mr. Barnes and his family.
