Obituary of Mildred A Irving

LITTLE FALLS – Mildred Ann (Whitcomb-Garlock) Irving, 90 of Little Falls peacefully passed away Sunday, August 3, 2014 with her family at her side, at the Folts Center, Herkimer She was born on October 19, 1923 in Elmira, NY the daughter of the late Percy E. and Elsie May (Petzold) Whitcomb. She was a graduate of Little Falls High School class of 1941. While in high school she was a member of the color guard and dance squad, school chorus and girls glee club. Her marriage to Raymond Gordon Garlock took place on April 11, 1942 at the Ilion Methodist Church. They lived on a farm in Paines Hollow and raised beef cows and owned and boarded horses. The couple had three children, Sandra Jean, Gordon Kip and Ellen Diane. On May 30, 1975 Mildred was united in marriage to Richard Frederick Irving in Little Falls. She was a member of the Paines Hollow United Methodist Church, the Auskerada, Maquaes, Rock City Chapter # 272 OES, Dolgeville, the Paines Hollow Home Bureau and in April of 1968 became a member of the D.A.R. In her spare time she enjoyed horseback riding, skiing, gardening, sewing and knitting. She was a devoted and loving mother and friend to all and was a wonderful cook and also enjoyed baking. Mildred enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and many friends and family at camp on Piseco Lake with her husband Dick. Mildred was employed at one time as a clerk for the former Cherry – Burrell Corp., Little Falls and she also drove taxi in the Mohawk Valley area. She was last employed as a book keeper at Whitcomb Pontiac, Little Falls for her brother James Whitcomb which was formerly owned by her father Percy E. Whitcomb. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her son; Gordon (Kip) Garlock and his wife Patricia (Tripple), Mohawk, NY, her daughters; Sandra Jean McKenney and her husband David, Sherburne, NY and Ellen Diane Goff and her husband Gene, Vermontville, NY, seven grandchildren; Cheryl McKenney, Jean McKenney and Myra Beth (McKenney) Scott and husband Jay all of Sherburne, NY, Chad Garlock, Little Falls, NY, Sara (Goff) Glaneuski and husband Jason, Boston, MA, Marla (Goff) Wolter and husband Tim, Slingerlands, NY, Bruce Goff and wife Maria (McNeil), Little Rock, AK, her sister; Charlotte L. (Whitcomb) Phillips and her husband Grant, Little Falls and several great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews. She is also survived by her stepchildren; Robert Irving and wife Louise, Perry, NY, their children Nicole and Monica Irving, Richard Irving, Binghamton, NY, Mary Irving, Boulder, CO and Lisa (Irving) Ramirez and husband James, San Diego, CA and her son Phillip Gilmore. She was predeceased by her brothers; Kenneth Robert Whitcomb in 1927, James H. Whitcomb in 1992 and John M. Whitcomb in 1994, her sister; Marian W. Teall in 1994 ; a grand-daughter Davina Sue (McKenney) Stapleton 2005; and by her husband Richard Frederick Irving on June 6, 2007. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 2:00 pm from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls, NY with the Rev. Dr. Steven A. Scarcia, Rector of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls officiating. Interment will take place in Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 from 12-2 pm and to attend the funeral services to follow. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mildred be considered to the Alzheimer’s Association, CNY Chapter, 441 W. Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204 or to the Spinal Cord Society, 19051 County Highway 1, Fergus Falls, MN 56537. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose. The family would like to publicly thank all those involved with caring for Mildred, especially the Country Manor, Herkimer where she resided for several years, the Folts Center, Herkimer, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Utica and Little Falls Hospital.
