Obituary of Magdalen Gressler
Magdalen K. Gressler
Magdalen “Maggie” Gressler, 87, of State Route 5S, Mohawk, passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, on June 8, 2022, with her family by her side. She was born in North Collins, NY on November 11, 1934. She was the daughter of Clarence and Lucille (Schmitt) Kohn.
Maggie was raised in Little Falls, graduating from St. Mary’s Academy, Class of 1952. She enjoyed her job as a telephone operator for the NY Telephone Company before becoming a homemaker and raising four children with Allen, her husband of 58 years.
Early in her marriage, Maggie lived briefly in Florida and Virginia before permanently settling in Little Falls. She always appreciated the beauty of the surrounding countryside and was grateful to return to the Mohawk Valley because “Nothing’s more beautiful than summer in New York.”
In every place Maggie lived, she developed deep friendships which endured throughout her lifetime. She truly appreciated her friends and thoroughly enjoyed her social life: playing cards, competing in bowling leagues, cross-country skiing, attending activities at the East Herkimer Senior Center, winning at bingo and the slots at Turning Stone, going swimming, dining out with her “chat and chew” friends, and being active in Home Bureau, Rosary Society, and Holy Family Parish.
Maggie provided for her family by preparing home cooked meals and baked goods. She canned tomatoes, pickles, applesauce, and jellies, and often gifted her breads, cookies, candies, pies, and baked beans to family, friends, and church fundraisers. She also sewed and crafted useful and decorative items such as children's clothing, quilted baby blankets, Christmas tree skirts, crocheted blankets, knitted slippers, and evergreen and pinecone wreaths. She created beautiful rock gardens around her home, and always shared clippings of her flowers with any passerby who happened to stop and ask.
Maggie is survived by her children and grandchildren: Carole, (Greg), Tyler, Connor, Sarah Burns; Bill, (Eloisa), Emma, Evan Gressler; Kathy, (Ray), Domiano, Gianna, Anthony, Angelina Altieri; and Karen (Craig) Rowe; her brother, Clarence Kohn, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Allen, and her sisters Agnes Dillon, Evie Bucklin, Kate Hart, Mary Lou Pietropaoli, and Ruth Evans.
