Obituary of Harold Cheney, Jr.

Mr. Harold Cheney, Jr., 94 , of Broadwyn Drive, Reynoldsburg, OH, died on November 15th, 2023 at his home. He was born in Little Falls, NY on March 29, 1929, the son of the late Harold and Helen (Scannell) Cheney.

He attended St Mary's Academy and St Mary's High School in Little Falls, graduating in 1946.

He met Waltraut Albrecht at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where they were studying art. They married on October 24, 1953, sharing a beloved union of 65 years until she passed away on December 23, 2018.

He was drafted into the Army in June 1953 and served in Korea. He stayed in the Army, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He continued his education as circumstances allowed, earning a B.B.A. from the University of Hawaii. He retired from the Army in 1974 as a Chief Warrant Officer 3.

After leaving the Army he studied at the University of South Carolina, earning a Master of Librarianship in 1975. He then spent three years in a PhD program at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, PA.

In 1978 he took a position with OCLC Online Computer Library Center in Columbus, OH.  He left there in 1989 to become Assistant Dean of Libraries at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN.

The son of a storyteller, he continued that tradition throughout his life. In retirement he was active in the National Amateur Press Association and published several books, including Jack of Tabbyshire and Other Grandfather Tales.

He is predeceased by his sister, Margaret McLaughlin and survived by two sons Timothy Cheney and his wife Judy Lewis, Glenside, PA and Harold Cheney, III and his wife Lori, Reynoldsburg, OH, five daughters Rose Cheney and her husband Howard Wiener, Philadelphia, PA, Carolyn Cheney and her husband Steaphan Scott, Columbus, OH, Elizabeth Cheney and her husband Judson McCranie, Brunswick, GA, Mary Kretsch, Cumming, GA and Gwendolyn Rivera and her husband Juan, Maui, HI, 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and his cat Posey.

Graveside services will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Herkimer, NY on December 9, 2023 at 10:30AM.

Arrangements are by the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls, NY.
