Obituary of Joseph E McCarthy

LITTLE FALLS - Joseph E. McCarthy, 84 of Burwell Street, Little Falls a long time local Pharmacist, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born on December 27, 1929 in Albany the son of the late J. Earle and Katherine (Maxwell) McCarthy. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy, Little Falls Class of 1947. Following graduation he was employed by the Remington Arms, Co., and the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. He then enrolled in the Albany College of Pharmacy and graduated from there in 1953. On September 12, 1953 he was united in marriage to the former Phyllis Plunkett at St. Mary’s Church, Little Falls and have enjoyed a loving union for 60 years. For several years he was a member of the Army National Guard. He enjoyed golfing, skiing, playing cards and spending time at Pleasant Lake. But most of all he loved flying his airplane with friends. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish Church, Little Falls, the former Knights of Columbus Council # 220, Little Falls, Little Falls Elk’s Lodge # 42, B.P.O.E., and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and “always” expected them to win. Joe worked for his father in the operation of McCarthy’s Drugs Store until his passing in 1959. In 1963 he purchased Coat’s Drug Store in Little Falls and combined the two stores which he operated until 1987. He was later employed as a pharmacist for Rite Aid, CVS and Kinney’s Drug Stores in the area. He was last employed in the pharmacy department of Little Falls Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife Phyllis, his son; Joseph M. McCarthy and his wife Lee Ann, Portsmouth, RI, his daughter; Mary E. McCarthy, Chatham, MA, his brother; John McCarthy and his wife Annmarie, Rockville, MD, his sister; Jane Muller, New York City, sister and brother in law; Joan and Joe Seifried, West Winfield, his wonderful and cherished grandchildren; Bart, Ryan, Adrian, Eamon, Sieria and Sydney, his great grandchildren; Carmen, Declan, Dylan and Savanna Marie and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son; William J. McCarthy on June 29, 2009 and by his brother; Walter McCarthy. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 9:00 am from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls, NY and at 9:30 am form the Holy Family Parish Church, Cor. Main and Johns St.’s, Little Falls, NY where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Terence Healy. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Herkimer. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 from 4-7 pm and to attend the funeral services on Wednesday morning. Main St., Little Falls, NY 13365 or to Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose.
