When I watched Gary wrestle in college I was always amazed. He made
winning look easy. I wrestled in high school and I know how hard it
was to train and be on that mat. I wanted to wrestle on the college team
but I never had enough courage to even try out. Each time I saw Gary
wrestle I just knew he would win. I never approached Gary in college
because of my timid nature. We connected only recently and I was
looking forward to seeing him when he planned to come to
Long Island. I wish his family peace in this terrible and sudden loss.

My sincerest condolences the the Lehr family, and all his friends. I was lucky enough to be on the wrestling team with Gary for my first two years at Oneonta. Unlike Gary, who had unbelievable talent, I was a scrub. What I admired most about Gary is that with all that talent, he was a very humble person ... a very caring "brother". Like many of the other brothers, I was fortunate enough to get to sit down with Gary at one of the reunions, and actually got to know more about him than I knew in college. I loved his positive attitude, and will miss "the gentle giant".
Sincerely, Peter

It was a pleasure to meet and know Gary through his visits to Denver to adventure with David and Cyndi. But it will be memories of mountain biking with him in Moab, UT I will remember most fondly. His witty banter and constant encouragement kept me going on difficult trails. As the slowest rider in the group, he was always sure I never got left to far behind, riding ahead then waiting for me to catch up. I don’t think I could have done it without his help! His exuberance for life and joy in seeking what was “around the next corner” were inspiring.
My sincere sympathy to Joan, David & Cyndi because of Gary’s sudden and unexpected departure. We know there were so many adventures yet to be had. I can only wish the Lehr family find comfort and peace from the many wonderful and caring sentiments shared by family and friends and special memories of their own. You are all in my thoughts.

Gary was a wonderful friend with whom I had the opportunity to spend some time with in early June while in Cooperstown at a mini-reunion of fraternity brothers and friends. We spent most of our time talking about Gary's upcoming bicycle adventure with his son Dave. Gary was smiling head-to-toe describing this ride with Dave, that he was so excited about. I could tell just from what Gary say saying and how he was saying it, that he was a great Dad.
While in school in Oneonta, Gary took me on as student, as I was preparing to participate in wrestling intramurals, as a representative of our fraternity. I had never wrestled before, so Gary took the time to instruct me on several evenings in the gym, showing me the various holds and escape moves he had perfected during his amazing wrestling career. His teaching paid off, as to the amazement of many (myself included) I won my weight class.
Thank you, Gary, for being a great friend and "brother".
I am so very sad and my heartfelt condolences to Joan, Dave and Cyndi...

My deepest sympathies go out to your entire family at this time of loss. Gary and I were in ITK at Oneonta and in the same class. He was a gentle giant to me; quiet and reserved around campus and at our fraternity, and then nothing short of unbeatable when he hit the wrestling mats. To my good fortune, we spent a lot of time at our last reunion in Oneonta, 2 years ago. We shared stories, talked about family, and got to know each other again after 40 years of going our own ways. He had not changed one bit; always the humble, gracious, interested, quiet spoken man I knew back in school. He had an appreciation of living life to it's fullest, and I will cherish our last time together for many years to come. Gary was a good man, and I have been blessed to have known him.
Sincerely, Bill Griek

Joan and Dave,
I am saddened to learn about Gary. I also worked with Gary for nearly 20 years at DOH and it was a pleasure to work with him. I always marveled at his dedication and how he made the trek in from St. Johnsville every day. We had an eclectic group that made workdays seem less like work and Gary was a big part of that. A great person was lost last Thursday and I send my heartfelt condolences to you both and the rest of your family.

When I transferred to O-state I was put in Golding Hall. Oneonta had cable tv unlike my hometown. I use to like to go to the rec room and watch the old movies shown at night. I was watching alone one night when Gary walked in to get something from one of the machines. He walked over and introduced himself and watched the movie with me. It was the start of a good friendship. John Hirsch broke us together. A number of John's frat brothers met for lunch in Cohoes. When I saw Gary I went over to say hi and he gave me a hug. Gary wasn't the demonstrative type so I was touched. We talked about watching movies in the dorm. We started to keep in touch by e-mail. At the college reunion last month we agreed to meet at Brooks for lunch. I lost my little brother 3 years ago and so I know of Gary's family's loss. They say you can't pick your family but you can pick your friends. I'm glad Gary chose to make me a friend. His family can be proud of him. It's a loss to everyone who knew Gary.

My heartfelt sympathies to the Joan and David as well as all other family members for your loss. I've known Gary since our college days when we were in ITK together and I had just seen and spoken to him in Oneonta just a few weeks ago. We chatted about old times and about health issues and we agreed that staying fit and active was both our goals. Needless to say, I was shocked to hear about his passing. While this is a very difficult time for his family, please know that his ITK family of brothers also share your loss along with you. He will always be remembered by all as a quiet yet strong in character brother who was always a pleasure to be with and around. Rest in peace, brother, you, John, Bob, Rich Midlam, and Chico now have a quorum and so set the agenda for the rest of us to follow.

My condolences to the family. Gary and I were fraternity brothers since 1967 but did not get to truly know one another until recent years. We talked and bonded during a fraternity re-union this past June more than we had in our 4 yrs at Oneonta. We shared a love of cycling and he was scheduled to come stay w/ my wife and I for some road and mountain biking here on Long Island. I will miss his gentle and gentlemanly way.

Joan and David,
I'm extremely saddened to hear of Gary's passing, we worked together at the NYS Department of Health and got to know each other better when I bought a house on Caroga Lake. Gary would come visit with his canoe and very large dog, I never understood how he made it across the lake without flipping over. He helped me build my dock and we shared many laughs and home made beer. He always gave good honest advice. I will remember him with great affection.
May God bless you and give you strength through this difficult time.

Having just seen and talked with Gary recently with other fraternity brothers, it was such a shock to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences to Gary's family. When I was a young pledge in my fraternity, I remember seeing Gary with other fraternity members. He was well known to me as I loved to watch wrestling matches, and he was a star. My first thought when I saw him with the other members of ITK was if he belonged to that fraternity then it would be a great experience for me, also. He was a role model for other athletes at SUNY Oneonta. He was a special man. May his love for you,his family, bring you strength and peace during this difficult time.

My deepest condolences to the Lehr family. I am so sorry for your sudden and tragic loss and hope that your memories of times with Gary will warm your soul and lift your spirit. I was lucky to meet Gary on biking trips to Moab and Denver. On one of our Moab mountain bike rides (Klondike? Poison Spider? Porcupine Rim? Slickrock? Amasaback?) Gary and I rode together at a relatively conservative pace with me secretly hoping to avoid any unwanted injuries. He inspired me. He was adventurous and easy to be around. One time, he came back from a ride with a shoulder injury but it did not stop his appreciation of mountain biking or from being with his son Dave and daughter-in-law Cynthia and their many hiking and biking friends. Sending you love and kindness, Lori

Dear Joan & David,
We were so shocked and saddened by the news of Gary's death. Our deepest sympathy goes out to you both in this difficult time and we hope all the wonderful memories you both have with him will be of some comfort. Thinking of my times and visits with Gary, it is with a smile as I remember his positive, happy and up-for-anything attitude. First as my "partner" in David & Cynthia's wedding (starting with a morning bike ride), then overlapping visits to Denver, to a couple of Moab trips where he really showed his true grit...and love of being active, the outdoors and time with you, David. Gary clearly embraced life and took ownership of his happiness. It is inspiring to us, and we will nurture that spirit in us as our remembrance to Gary...and incentive to ourselves.
With love and prayers,
Catherine & Lori

Joan and David,
My sincere condolences for your loss. Gary was a truly a kind hearted, gentle man and a loyal brother. When I was pledging the fraternity back in 1969, he took the time to encourage me when other brothers were doing the ritualistic "busting" of the lowly pledge. He put his muscular hand on my shoulder and said "stick with it, joining this fraternity is worth all of the challenges." It was helpful advice and it set the tone for one of the best experiences of my life, complete with a large cadre of caring, lifelong friends. Recently, we both attended a fraternity reunion at Oneonta and I spent some quality time "chewing the fat" with him. As with all of us older guys, we discussed our aging bodies and what meds we are taking. His advice to "keep on moving, they can't hit a moving target" was sound. He was a gently giant, warm and genuine, nothing flashy but a whole lot of substance. He will be missed by all.
With sympathy, John Fusco, ITK

My heartfelt condolences to the Lehr family. I had the pleasure and honor of knowing Gary for just short of 50 years. We met in Oneonta and were founding fathers of ITK fraternity. I had the pleasure of watching many of his wrestling triumphs including going to another state university to watch him win the States. He was truly a class act. After college as with many of the relationships people drifted apart to take their own journeys of life. Many of us reconnected within the last 10 years. It was when I got to see Gary again. I was lucky enough to get to spend time catching up individually with Gary a few times including as recently as last month. In all our conversations it resonated through Gary how lucky he was to have the family he had and be able to enjoy times with them. I will truly miss him as I know everyone who knew him will.
