Obituary of Marshall K Gillette

LITTLE FALLS – Marshall K. Gillette, 87 of 6 Salisbury Street, Little Falls, NY passed away Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Alpine Nursing & Rehab. Center, Little Falls where he had been a resident since June of 2015. He was born on October 29, 1927 in Little Falls the son of the late John H. and Eva (Kresge) Gillette. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School class of 1945, where he was well known for his time spent on the football field. Following his service to our country in the US Army he attended St. Lawrence University from 1949-1953 receiving his Master’s Degree in Education and continued his college football career and served as head master of a campus dormitory. He was also proud of the fact that he was the first in his family to attend college. Mr. Gillette was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Army. Entering the service on January 24, 1946 in Albany. He served with the 10th Constabulary Regiment Band both here in the states and in Germany, where he was a drum major, baritone and pianist entertaining the troops. He was honorably discharged as a Technician Fourth Grade (S/Sgt.) on June 13, 1947 at Camp Kilmer, NJ. He was of the Methodist faith. He was an over 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge# 181 F&AM, Little Falls. After the war he played football for the Little Falls Veterans semi pro team and worked for the former Hansen’s Laboratories, Little Falls before entering St. Lawrence. He later was employed by the Hudson River Psychiatric Hospital. Mr. Gillette was employed as an English teacher for the Troy City School District for 30 years. While there he served as a coach for the football, hockey and golf teams as well as heading the former Troy Ski Club. He retired from teaching in 1983. During the summer months he was employed for 11 years for the water monitoring program of Hamilton County, serving for years as head of the program. He was a summer resident of the Higgins Bay, Piseco Lake, NY since 1927 where he enjoyed many memorable times and friends. He is survived by his son John M. Gillette, Little Falls and his step son Thomas R. Panko, Jr., and his wife Julie, Little Falls. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 11:00 am from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls with the Rev. Dr. Steven A. Scarcia officiating. Interment will take place in Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills where he will be laid to rest next to his parents. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 from 10-11 am and to attend the funeral services to follow. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mr. Gillette be considered to the Little Falls Hospital, 140 Burwell St., Little Falls, NY 13365.
